Wolfgang Leitenberger’s Layout

This layout is only 8 x 4 feet in size, but it is lot of memories and a real big value for me. My father started building this layout in 1952 right after WWII. At this time there was not to much money in his wallet, so he tried to build everything by himself, except the locos and cars, all the tracks, the turnouts, even the solenoids to operate the turnouts are self made. Late in the 60s I continued his work, modified the control board and the wiring, now 40 years later I got this exciting feeling again about model trains. Now I’m collecting a lot of old cars and locos from the whole world through the Internet and from train shows and try to keep the layout in shape. The layout is not finished yet, it will properly never reach a final stage.

In 1999 when we decided to move from Germany to California, the layout got very well prepared and packed for a long trip. This layout is freelanced, operated traditionally by 16V AC in 10 blocks, has overhead power on all tracks, 9 turnouts and 4 decouplers.

Currently we live in Hollister, CA and I joined the European Train Enthusiasts (ETE) in early 2002.

Believe it or not, my son Andre (26) got “infected” too, here is the first picture of his layout.

This layout will be digital controlled. After the completion of the track layout.

All the track got replaced by Märklin K-Track. Still under construction.
